Before the moves: the big ideas
Development is the compensation
The investment works only while White brings pieces into play with tempo. If Black completes development and exchanges the active pieces, the missing pawns become important.
Know the defensive systems
The Schlechter ...d5 return, Copenhagen ...Bb4+, Classical ...Nf6, Chigorin ...Qe7, Horowitz ...c6, and solid ...d6 each ask a different question.
Punish mistakes, not legal moves
The tactics chapter contains published opponent errors with concrete refutations. Sound defences remain in the theory chapters and are not advertised as traps.

Recover the pawn and learn the distinct system. Once the gambit is over, the lesson stops at the branch's opening handoff rather than replaying an unrelated middlegame.
